How to Avoid Crypto Scams: 10 Red Flags to Watch For

Vishu S

Crypto’s openness is a strength, but it also makes it a magnet for scammers. The good news: most scams follow predictable patterns. Learn the red flags and you can avoid the vast majority of them.

Common types of crypto scams

The usual suspects include fake giveaways (“send 1 ETH, get 2 back”), phishing sites that steal your login or seed phrase, fake investment platforms promising guaranteed returns, romance and “pig butchering” scams, and “rug pulls” where developers abandon a project after taking investors’ money.

Red flags to watch for

Be deeply suspicious of: guaranteed or unusually high returns; pressure to act fast; anyone asking for your seed phrase or private keys; unsolicited DMs and “support” agents; celebrity-endorsed giveaways; and links sent by strangers. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

How to protect yourself

Never share your recovery phrase with anyone, ever. Bookmark official sites and check URLs carefully. Use a hardware wallet for serious holdings. Enable two-factor authentication. Verify projects independently before investing. And review and revoke unnecessary token approvals on your wallet periodically.

If you are targeted

Slow down. Scammers rely on urgency and emotion. No legitimate platform or person will ever need your seed phrase. When in doubt, walk away — there is no transaction so urgent it is worth risking your funds.

The bottom line

Scams are the biggest threat to most crypto users — bigger than market volatility. A healthy dose of scepticism and good security habits will protect you better than anything else.
