What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a digital currency that operates without any central authority like a bank or government. It was introduced in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. Instead of a company running it, Bitcoin is maintained by a global network of computers following a shared set of rules.

How it works

Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a public ledger called the blockchain. When you send Bitcoin, the network of computers verifies and records the transaction, making it permanent and tamper-resistant. New bitcoins are created through “mining,” where computers compete to validate transactions and are rewarded with new coins.

Why does Bitcoin have value?

Bitcoin’s value comes from its scarcity (only 21 million will ever exist), its security, and the trust of a global community. Many see it as “digital gold” — a store of value that no single entity can inflate or censor.

How to get started

You can buy Bitcoin on a reputable exchange like Coinbase or Kraken, starting with any small amount. For security, enable two-factor authentication and consider moving larger holdings to a hardware wallet.

A word of caution

Bitcoin is highly volatile — its price can swing dramatically. Only invest what you can afford to lose, ignore “guaranteed return” scams, and take time to learn before committing serious money.
